![]() In Secrets of Sulphur Springs, a music-loving middle school boy named Griffin (Preston Oliver) moves into an abandoned hotel called The Tremont that his family plans to restore. It is a show about new friendships and old secrets that will leave you on the edge of your seat, as it did me. The writers of the show weave a chilling tale of mystery and suspense that is brought to life by the cast. This review is based on the first season (11 episodes) and I'm hoping they already have mapped the road to finish the series with a proper ending (because the story being told is only good and worth telling if it has a conclusion), instead of letting it derail and get cancelled, like so many series before (damn, even "Dinosaurs" got an ending, and it didn't required one!)ĭisney's new TV series, Secrets of Sulphur Springs, dives deep into the mysteries of the unknown. Of course, unlike "Dinosaurs," which was basically composed of unrelated episodes, this series tells a coherent story, so, there's a risk that the writers or the producers eventually do something wrong and break it, like padding the show with meaningless episodes or unnecessary drama. The actors are good (and they improve as the series advances), the script is well written, the production is excellent (scenarios, musical score, props, background) and the pace is fast, with lots happening in the 25 min of each episode. At first, nothing is explained, but the connection is established right in the first episode: some kids discover that there's a "portal" linking the present days with the past, around the time the girl disappeared. 30 years later, a man blows all his savings to buy the decayed hotel and move in with his unhappy and comprehensibly frustrated family, for reasons he can't/doesn't want to explain. ![]() ![]() A girl goes missing, somehow causing a hotel to be closed. Spoiler alert! You should know the drill. I, personally, don't think that's a problem, as long as the show is well done. Actually, it's so much like an episode of TTZ that some people may find it cliché. It's more like an episode of "The Twilight Zone" (1959) rewritten as a series. That's not to say that it's not entertaining for children, but that it's not Disney Channel's regular brainless junk. It's the same with this show, it has a bunch of kids running around, doing some goofy things, but it's NOT a show aimed for children. Remember Disney's "Dinosaurs" (1991)? It was NOT a children's show, although it was built to look so. If you are in doubt if you should or not watch this series, here's a quick check: if you like most of Disney Channel's series (shows like 'Whatever Place' and 'Whoever Montana'), then this series is probably not for you. Hopefully there is a season 2 coming soon. Surprisingly, the children's acting is far superior to the adults' acting. Not likely to win any awards or make it to the big screen, but it's good for what it is. The plot and acting were fairly good for a Disney show. Even my 38 year-old husband got into the series and got annoyed when we watched an episode without him and Insisted we rewind it. ![]() This show was creepy and mysterious enough to keep you interested, but not so scary to deter younger children. It reminds me of those "quality" Disney shows we remember from back in the day where the story was family oriented but engaging across the age span. However, we both agree that they don't make them like that anymore. I always loved watching Disney with her because it brought back the nostalgia of my childhood watching The Famous Jett Jackson, Fastforward, and Even Stevens. I have a younger teen daughter and when she was a child we enjoyed watching Disney shows like "Good Luck Charlie", "Shake It Up", and "Wizards of Waverly Place". ![]()

A candle may provide all too much illumination. "Īnd it occurred to me that, in fact, illumination is precisely the problem. The candle could be one of those ghastly scented and you're stuck with the foul odor that can linger for days if not weeks."īut then there was one that got me thinking: "The candle provides only minimal illumination. Some of them were wry jibes: "You could burn yourself. We had recently been talking on the phone about the unexamined assumptions of optimism and such unquestioned cliches as "Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness," and it turned out Errol had already compiled a list of seven reasons "why it makes sense to curse the darkness rather than light a candle," which he faxed me. Errol may be even more profoundly pessimistic than I am, although many of our conversations revolve around who's really got the darker attitude. I had recently been in receipt of a fax from my friend Errol Morris (director, most recently, of The Fog of War, to my mind a classic of informed, foundational, epistemological pessimism). There's a reason I brought up that last platitude in particular. On the belief that things will turn out all right, that Man will prevail, that Reason will triumph over Unreason, that Progress is inexorable, that it's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Our whole culture was founded on optimism, from the commercial to the theological. It's a delusion, but it's an optimistic delusion.īut to be a pessimist, to have a tragic sense of history, to doubt the Answers proffered by the various -isms (all variations of optim-ism) - that is impermissible. For all the "transgressiveness" the armchair warriors in the academy claim, they basically believe "unpacking" Jane Austen with addled jargon will somehow shake the foundations of oppressive "hegemony" to make a better world. Indeed, it may be the last heresy left in America, the last real transgression - to be a pessimist. I have taken heat before for pessimistic speculations about the nature of human nature, about the future fate of the Jews (is a "second Holocaust," this time in the Middle East, possible?), and I probably will take heat for what I'm about to say here in making the broader case for what I'd call informed, foundational pessimism. I take no satisfaction in having my bleak pessimism - well, I prefer to call it "tragic sense of history" - confirmed. (In a March 2003 issue of The Observer.) I still hope I'll be proven wrong in the long run. Who was the self-described "historical pessimist" who wrote last March - when it was still unclear whether the invasion of Iraq would proceed - "War or no war, things will get worse." ![]() ![]() ![]() Pallet Jacks and Order Pickers Classes 2 and 3 – $59.95 Learn more about our warehouse forklift course.Includes Electric Motor Rider Trucks for both sit down and stand up rider models ,Ĭlass 4, which covers Internal Combustion Engine Trucks with Cushion Tires for sit down rider models andĬlass 5 Internal Combustion Engine Trucks with Pneumatic Tires.
